Abstract

Mental health is crucial to general well-being and plays a vital role in enabling individuals to manage daily stressors, work productively, and contribute to their communities. Physical health is equally important, referring to the body being fit, strong, and free from disease. Examining the influence of physical activity on mental health is important for developing effective interventions to improve quality of life and address mental health problems. This study examines physical activity and its role in mental well-being, exploring how psychological, social, and emotional dimensions are associated with different levels of activity. A sample of 331 individuals from urban and rural areas of Lucknow was obtained using a convenience random sampling method. Data were collected using a socio-demographic questionnaire and the Mental Health Continuum Short Form (MHC-SF). Differences in physical activity levels according to gender, family type, and geographical area were identified. Vigorous physical activity was associated with the highest levels of emotional well-being, while moderate and light physical activity were also associated with respondents' well-being. Overall, men reported higher well-being levels than women. In addition, respondents from urban areas reported higher levels of well-being than those from rural areas.
