Abstract

Pigeonpea marketing efficiency influences farmers' price realisation and the distribution of value among market participants. The present study examined the marketing channels, marketing costs, margins, price spread and producer's share in consumer's rupee for sole pigeonpea in Amravati district of Maharashtra during 2025-26. Primary information was collected from 120 pigeonpea farmers and 25 market intermediaries selected from five APMC markets. Two marketing channels were identified: Producer-Village Trader-Wholesaler-Processor and Producer-Wholesaler-Processor. Marketing cost, price spread and producer's share were calculated channel-wise. Garrett's ranking technique was used to identify marketing constraints. Producer marketing cost was Rs. 89.10/q in Channel I and Rs. 176.15/q in Channel II. The producer's net price was Rs. 5,953.76/q in Channel I and Rs. 6,113.10/q in Channel II. Price spread was Rs. 1,449.28/q and Rs. 1,324.25/q, respectively, while producer's share in consumer's rupee was 80.42 and 82.19 per cent. Channel II was relatively more efficient because of its lower price spread and higher producer's share. Lack of storage facilities, price fluctuation and lack of grading and standardisation were the leading marketing constraints. Strengthening producer-wholesaler linkages, storage and market information can improve farmers' price realisation.
