Dr. Christopher Koroneos

The Christophis Koronaios John was elected Mayor of Nisyros on May 18, 2014 with a historic record of 210 votes from the opposing party. He was born, raised and attended the elementary school and the secondary school in Nisyros. He graduated from Ippokratio Gymnasium in Kos and then studied Chemical Engineering at Columbia University in New York, USA, where he obtained his 1976 diploma. In 1978 he completed Masters of Science in Chemical Engineering at Columbia University, received a scholarship from the National Science Foundation of America (NSF). He then worked in the chemical industry in America as an engineer for the development and design of innovative production processes. In 1984 he completed Masters of Philosophy in Energy Science at New York University in New York, with a scholarship. His PhD in Chemical Engineering acquired his degree in Chemical Engineering from Columbia University in 1987, with a scholarship and a teaching assistant for four years. In 1987 he joined the research center of the largest chemical company Dow Chemicals where he worked as a senior researcher. He was recruited as a professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering at Columbia University in 1991, where he remained until 1998. His love for Greece and especially his place of origin, Nisyros, is a driving force for his repatriation. In Greece it came with funding from the repatriation program of Greek scientists from the General Secretariat for Research and Technology.
